The powerful storm system that moved through the central part of the US earlier this week caused a great deal of property damage, but fortunately, limited loss of life. The mega-storm, which touched off dozens of tornadoes from Kansas to Minnesota, was unusually well-organized. This enabled the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center was able to issue warnings up to 24 hours in advance to those in the path of the storm. The warnings, and the seriousness with which many residents treated them, are being credited with the small number of fatalities relative to the strength of the storm.
Advanced warning of pending disaster is extremely helpful, but more often than not, disasters strike with no such warning.
